Plan
Make a matching pillow to go with your star quilt. Yardage for the cream/red toile includes fabric for the pillow back. (Merry Christmas Toile quilt pattern is available in Quick Quilts' January 2005 issue.)

Cut
Red solid
... 8 squares 2” x 2”
... 1 square 3 1/2” x 3 1/2”
... 2 strips 1 1/2” x 9 1/2”
... 2 strips 1 1/2” x 11 1/2”
Cream/red toile
... *1 square (backing) 14 1/2” x 14 1/2”
... 4 rectangles 2” x 3 1/2”
... 4 squares 2” x 2”
... 2 strips 2” x 6 1/2”
... 2 strips 2” x 9 1/2”
... 2 strips 2” x 11 1/2”
... 2 strips 2” x 14 1/2”

Sew
Step 1. Draw diagonal line on wrong side of red solid 2” square with marking tool of your choice. Referring to Diagram I, place red square on cream/rectangle, right sides together, aligning raw edges. Stitch on drawn line; trim away and discard excess fabric. Press open. Repeat the mark, sew, trim and press process on opposite side of cream rectangle using red solid 2” square to make pieced rectangle. Make 4.

Step 2. Referring to Diagram II, arrange and sew 3 rows using cream/red toile 2” squares, pieced rectangles, and red 3 1/2” square.

Step 3. Referring to Assembly Diagram, sew cream/red 2” x 6 1/2” strips to sides of block. Sew cream/red 2” x 9 1/2” strips to top/bottom. Stitch red solid 1 1/2” x 9 1/2” strips to sides. Sew remaining red strips to top/bottom. Sew cream/red 2” x 11 1/2” strips to sides. Stitch remaining cream/red strips to top/bottom to complete pillow top.

Step 4. Layer cream/red 14 1/2” square backing with pillow top, right sides together. Sew around outside edge using 1/4” seam allowance, leaving 8” opening on 1 side. Turn right side out; press. Insert 14” pillow form and stitch opening closed.
