Sew
1. Referring to Assembly Diagram, sew black/red dot 1 1/4" strips to tan rectangle, short sides first. In same manner, stitch black poinsettia print strips to pieced rectangle to complete background.

2. Trace Templates A-C on paper side of paper-backed fusible web. Cut apart, leaving small margin beyond drawn lines. Strip-piece units as shown in Diagrams I-A and B. Press seams open. Following manufacturer's instructions, fuse Template A and B shapes to wrong side of appropriate units, aligning dashed lines with seams. Fuse template C shapes to assorted green texture fabrics. Cut template shapes apart on drawn lines.

3. Finger-press background in half on both length and width; use folds as placement guide. Referring to Diagram II and photo, position prepared templates. Following manufacturer's instructions, fuse in place. Machine buttonhole stitch (Diagram III) around appliqué. Note: Susan used clear monofilament thread and a short stitch length to conceal her appliqué stitches on the ornaments.

4. Layer, baste, and quilt. Susan hand quilted ornament hanger lines with green embroidery floss in a large running stitch (Diagram IV). The quilt border was framed with 3 rows of machine quilting 1/2" apart (with the first 2 rows starting and stopping at the holly). Bind with black poinsettia print (see Quiltmaking Fundamentals). Tack red buttons to holly leaves (see photo).
