Cutting the Novelty Print
The pieced block centers were fussy-cut to feature skater motifs from the blue Timeless Treasures skater print. If you choose to do the same, keep seam allowances in mind when selecting a motif. When cutting, center the motif within a plastic template 5 1/2" square.

To properly orient the directional print in the outer border, top and bottom strips were pieced from width of fabric (WOF) strips. If you choose a non-directional print for your outer border, you can cut all the outer border strips on the lengthwise grain, and you will need only 1 1/2 yds. of this fabric.

Sew
Step 1. Trace Templates A-G and I-K on paper side of paper-backed fusible web. Cut apart, leaving small margin beyond drawn lines. Following manufacturer's instructions, fuse to wrong side of appropriate fabrics; cut apart on drawn lines.
Step 2. Finger-press blue mottle 11" square in half on both length and width; use folds as placement guide. Referring to Diagram I and photo, position template fabrics for rear skate in alphabetical order, weaving Template J and K fabrics together before fusing. Repeat for front skate. Hint: Heidi recommends pre-assembling each skate using an appliqué pressing sheet to protect ironing surface. Following manufacturer's instructions, fuse in place. Machine or hand buttonhole stitch (Diagram II) around appliqué. Trim to 10 1/2" square. Make 6 Skate Blocks.
