Plan
Holly's quilt features the Mikado fabric collection and selections from the LakeHouse Library by Lakehouse Dry Goods.
Holly cut the 4" squares from the oriental lantern print on point so the lanterns are straight when setting the blocks. The binding on the featured quilt was cut extra wide (finishes at 1") and gives the appearance of a narrow outer border (see Step 5). Do likewise if you wish.

Sew
1. Referring to Diagram I-A, sew matching sets of assorted stripe/dot 4" and 5 1/2" strips to sides of 4" square. Stitch matching sets of assorted 5 1/2" and 7" strips to sides to make Framed Square Block (Diagram I-B). Make 64 total.

2. To prepare the blocks for assembly, sew black/red 7" strips to top and bottom of each (Diagram II).

Diagram 1-B
3. Note: Referring to Assembly Diagram, arrange quilt on a design wall or large flat area. Sew each row individually and replace on design wall to check placement before proceeding. The setting triangles on all edges and corners are cut oversized to allow trimming quilt edges even after assembly. Starting in the upper right corner, arrange 15 diagonal rows using blocks, black 7" squares, long sashing strips, and setting triangles. Sew each block row in the following order: sew blocks and 7" black squares together in strip (watching orientation of 7" black sashing strips added in Step 2); stitch sashing strip to one long side and trim even with ends of block strip; stitch red 13" quarter-square triangle(s) to end(s) of row. Sew 7 upper right and 7 lower left block rows together and sew sections to sides of remaining sashing strip. Stitch red 8" half-square triangles to corners. Trim edges even.

4. Layer, baste, and quilt. The featured quilt was machine quilted. The blocks were ditch quilted with a feather motif centered on each black square. Three parallel right angle lines (spaced 1" apart) were quilted on each red setting triangle.
5. To make binding, fold and press black/red 4 1/2" x 360" strip in half lengthwise, wrong sides together. Align raw edges of binding strip with edges of quilt top; sew with a 1/4" seam, mitering strip at corners. Trim backing and batting 3/4" beyond quilt top edges. Turn binding to back side and hand stitch in place (see Quiltmaking Fundamentals).
