Flirty Flannel Table Runner & Napkin Rings

Table Runner
Finished Table Runner Size
9" x 31 1/2"

Fabric Requirements
Assorted flannel solids (pennies) 1 1/2 yds. total
Black flannel solid (backing strip) 1/2 yd.
Sewing thread
Perle cotton, black

Cut
Note: Cutting instructions for the penny shapes are given on the piecing templates. (Download Template Diagrams - PDF file)
Black flannel solid 1 strip 14" x 29 3/4"

Sew
Step 1. To make pennies, layer 2 matching Template A fabrics right sides together. Stitch around outside edge using 1/4" seam allowance (Diagram I-A), leaving a small opening for turning. Trim seam to 1/8". Turn right side out and press. Hand stitch opening closed. Make 56 total. Center finished penny A on 1 assorted penny B (Diagram I-B). Using black perle cotton and buttonhole stitch (Diagram I-C) sew penny A to penny B. Lay stitched penny on matching plain penny B (right sides together) and stitch around outside edge, using 1/4" seam allowance and leaving an opening for turning (Diagram I-D). Trim, turn right side out, press, and stitch opening closed. Buttonhole stitch around outside edge (Diagram I-E). Make 56 total.

Step 2. Repeat sew, trim, turn and press process to make Templates C and D pennies (Diagram II). Make 39 total of each. Buttonhole stitch around C pennies only.

Step 3. To make backing strip, fold black 29 3/4" strip in half lengthwise, right sides together (Diagram III). Using 1/4" seam allowance, sew along long side. Turn strip right side out and press, centering seam on 1 long side. Tuck raw ends inside and stitch closed.

Step 4. To attach pennies to backing strip, position 2 rows of 14 A/B pennies on each side of center backing seam (Assembly Diagram), adjusting spacing as needed. Note: The corner pennies sit with only a quarter of the penny on the strip. Sides of outer rows of pennies also extend beyond backing strip. Using black perle cotton, tack pennies to backing strip.
Step 5. Position assorted penny C in the space between 4 A/B pennies. Center assorted penny D on penny C and buttonhole stitch around edge of D, through penny C and backing strip. Repeat for 39 total C/D pennies.
