Sand & Sun Webonus: Pillowcase Pattern

Fabric Requirements (for 2 cases)
Cream solid 1 5/8 yds.
Multicolor stripe 1/8 yd.
Tan novelty print 5/8 yd.

Cutting Instructions
Cream solid
     2 rectangles 26 1/2" x 40 1/2"
Multicolor stripe
     2 strips 1 1/4" x 40 1/2"
Tan novelty print
     2 strips 9 1/2" x 40 1/2"

Pillowcase Assembly
1 Referring to Diagram I, stitch together cream 26 1/2" x 40 1/2" rectangle, stripe 1 1/4" x 40 1/2" strip, and tan 9 1/2" x 40 1/2" strip. Make 2. Fold in half (right sides together) as illustrated by dotted line in diagram.


2 Using 1/4" seam allowance, stitch layers together along 2 sides as shown in Diagram II-A.


3 At open end, fold 1/4" to wrong side (Diagram II-B) ; press.


Turn half of remaining width of tan 9 1/2" strip to wrong side, covering seam allowance between tan 9 1/2" strip and stripe 1 1/4" strip (Diagram II-C) ; press.


Pin in place. Turn pillowcase right side out. Topstitch along seam between tan and stripe strips (on right side), being sure to catch folded edge that was pinned to wrong side of case (Diagram II-D). Make 2 pillowcases.

Backing (piece lengthwise) 5 yds.
Batting Twin size

Cream solid
     24 squares 5 1/4" x 5 1/4", cut in half twice diagonally to make 96 quarter-square triangles
Bright blue mottle
     *2 strips 2 1/2" x 70", pieced from 4 width of fabric (WOF) strips
     *2 strips 2 1/2" x 58", pieced from 3 WOF strips"
     24 squares 5 1/4" x 5 1/4", cut in half twice diagonally to make 96 quarter-square triangles
Red mottle
     48 squares 4 7/8" x 4 7/8", cut in half diagonally to make 96 half-square triangles
Tan novelty print
     24 squares 8 1/2" x 8 1/2"
Multicolor stripe
4 strips 6 1/4" x 72", pieced from 8 WOF strips
*Cut first.

sew
1 Referring to Diagram I-A, sew cream and blue quarter-square triangles together. Stitch red half-square triangle to side to make pieced square. Make 96.



Sew 2 rows of 2 pieced squares each (Diagram I-B), watching orientation. Sew rows together to make Whirlwind Block. Make 24.



2 Note: Refer to Assembly Diagram for following steps. Sew 8 rows using 3 blocks and 3 tan squares each. Sew rows together.



3 Stitch blue 70" strips to sides; trim even with top and bottom. Sew remaining blue strips to top/bottom; trim even with sides.

4 Sew multicolor stripe 72" strips to sides; trim even. Stitch remaining stripe strips to top/bottom; trim even.

5 Layer, baste, and quilt as desired. Bind with red mottle.
