Sew
Step 1. Trace Templates C-F, H, and I on paper side of paper-backed fusible web. Cut apart, leaving small margin beyond drawn lines. Following manufacturer's instructions, fuse to wrong side of appropriate fabrics; cut apart on drawn lines.
Step 2. Finger-press blue plaid 6" x 13" strip and 1 blue plaid 4 1/4" x 8 1/4" rectangle in half widthwise; use folds as placement guides. Referring to Diagram I, position appliqué fabrics in alphabetical order. Following manufacturer's instructions, fuse in place. Machine or hand buttonhole stitch (Diagram II) around appliqué. Stitch line connecting leaves to pincushion top using straight stitch in green thread (see templates for placement).

Step 4. To make scissors holder closure, sew rust rectangles right sides together using 1/4" seam allowance, leaving opening for turning (Diagram V). Trim corners, turn right side out, press, and hand stitch opening closed. Stitch one long side to yellow strip just above scissors holder opening.
Step 5. To make needle holder, stitch appliquéd blue plaid 4 1/4" x 8 1/4" rectangle to plain blue plaid rectangle, right sides together, leaving opening for turning. Trim corners, turn right side out, press, and hand stitch opening closed. Lay batting 3 1/2" x 7 1/4" strip on plain side of finished blue plaid rectangle, centering (Diagram VI); stitch across width. Lay needle holder on yellow strip (Diagram VII); stitch close to edges of needle holder and just below batting. Embellish strip (lining) with decorative stitching if desired. Pat used navy thread and a floral vine stitch to outline the scissors holder, and to detail the top of the scissors holder closure, the spine of the case, and the area above the needle holder.
Step 6. Fold rickrack in half to make loop. Layer the case for assembly as follows: 6" x 13" batting strip; prepared yellow floral lining, right side up; rickrack loop, ends even with edge of fabric; blue plaid appliquéd strip, wrong side up (Diagram VIII); pin to secure. Stitch around all sides, leaving opening on 1 long side for turning. Trim corners, turn right side out, and hand stitch opening closed. Topstitch 1/4" from edges; sew 2 lines of stitching 1/4" apart along spine of case. Tack snap set to top of scissors holder and underside of scissors holder closure. Tack blue button to center of scissors holder closure, navy button to case front under rickrack loop, and heart button above pincushion appliqué.
