Step 1
For place mats:
Referring to Diagram I-A, stitch together 1 red/gold print, 1 green/gold print, and 1 red-on-red floral 2" x WOF strip. Make 3. Press in direction of arrow. Cut 20 segments 5" wide. In same manner, stitch together 1 green/gold print, 1 red-on-red floral, and 1 green-on-green floral 2" x WOF strip (see Diagram I-B). Make 2. Press in direction of arrow. Cut 16 segments 5" wide.
Step 2
Carefully arrange and stitch 3 rows using 5 strip segments from first strip set and 4 strip segments from second strip set (see Diagram II). Sew rows together. Stitch green/red large floral 5" x 16" strip to side; trim ends of strip even with pieced area. Make 4.
Step 3
Place 14" x 18 1/2" backing fabric rectangle on place mat top, right sides together, and place both on top of 14" x 18 1/2" fleece rectangle. Baste layers together to secure.
Step 4
Refer to Diagram III to trim corners. Measure and mark 2 3/8" from corner in each direction. Cut diagonally from point to point. Alternate method: Align 45° line of acrylic ruler with raw edge of place mat. Measure 1 5/8" from corner; trim. Trim all 4 corners. Repeat on remaining mats.
Step 5
Stitch 1/4" from edges, leaving 4" opening for turning. Remove basting and turn right side out. Hand stitch opening closed. Make 4 place mats. Lynn machine ditch quilted her place mats.
Step 6
For napkins:
Place green-on-green floral 15" square on red-on-red floral 15" square, right sides together. Stitch 1/4" seam around all sides, leaving 3" opening for turning. Clip corners. Turn right side out. Press. Hand stitch opening closed. Topstitch 1/4" from edge. Make 4 napkins.
