Plan
This project is a great way to use some of the scraps and fat quarters in your fabric stash. Detailing the eyes with permanent pen before appliquéing will allow you to draw a fine line around each circle and to add the center circle without getting ink on the surrounding fabric (see photo detail).
You Need:
Ice blue print (block) 3/8 yd.
Bright blue print (block) 5/8 yd.
White texture (snowflakes) 14" x 18" piece
Black/white stripe (penguins) 13" x 18" piece
White/black print (penguin faces/fronts) 10" x 15" piece
White solid (eyes) 3" x 5" piece
Yellow texture (beaks) 3" x 5" piece
Green check (plumes) 4" x 6" piece
Red print (hat crowns) 5" x 7" piece
Purple print (hat brims) 7" x 7" piece
Black/white snowflake print (border, binding) 5/8 yd.
White/black/red dot print (border) 1/4 yd.
Backing 1 yd.
Batting 36" x 36" piece
Paper-backed fusible web 1 1/2yds.

Sew!
1. On wrong side of ice blue 8 7/8" square, draw diagonal line with marking tool of your choice. Referring to Diagram I, place ice blue square on bright blue 8 7/8" square, right sides together. Sew 1/4" seam on each side of marked line; cut apart on marked line. Press open to make pieced squares. Make 4.
2. Sew ice blue and bright blue 4 1/2" x 8 1/2" rectangles together to make 2-patch square (Diagram II). Make 4.
3. Using pieced squares, 2-patch squares and bright blue 8 1/2" square, arrange and sew 3 rows (Diagram III). Sew rows together to make Churn Dash Block.

4. Trace Templates A-J on paper side of paper-backed fusible web. Cut apart, leaving small margin beyond drawn lines. Following manufacturer's instructions, fuse to wrong side of appropriate fabrics; cut apart on drawn lines. Use fine-tip permanent pen to draw black circle in center of Template D (eye), and to make a fine line around the outer edge (see photo detail). Make 8. Using seam lines as placement guides and referring to Assembly Diagram and photo, position template fabrics in alphabetical order. Following manufacturer's instructions, fuse in place.
5. Sew black/white snowflake print and white/black/red dot print 2 1/2" x WOF strips together (Diagram IV). Make 2. Press in direction of arrow. Cut into 26 segments 2 1/2" wide. Sew 6 segments together to make side border strip, alternating black and white squares. Make 2. Sew 7 segments together to make top/bottom border strip. Make 2. Referring to Assembly Diagram for orientation, sew side border strips to sides of quilt; sew top/ bottom strips to top and bottom.

6. Layer and baste quilt top for quilting method of your choice. Deb machine quilted 1/4" outside each appliqué figure, and ditch quilted around the pieced border. She also used color coordinated thread to machine quilt 1/8" inside the edges of each appliqué piece. Bind quilt with black/white snowflake print fabric (see Quiltmaking Fundamentals).
