Plan!
Michele has designed a quilt so full of color and sparkle that it lights up a room. She used batiks by Timeless Treasures in a delightful variety of beautiful hues to charm the eye. Take care to use an exact 1/4" seam allowance when piecing the blocks so the pieced border will fit perfectly.

Cut!
Assorted batiks

... 1 square 6" x 6"
cut 48 matching sets of:
... 8 squares 1 7/8" x 1 7/8"
... 1 square 3 1/4" x 3 1/4"
cut a total of:
... 22 strips 2 1/2" x 20" (binding)
Black solid
... 120 squares 3 1/4" x 3 1/4"
... 120 rectangles 3 1/4" x 6"
... 30 strips 3 1/4" x 11 1/2"
... 30 strips 3 1/4" x 14 1/4"
... 192 squares 1 7/8" x 1 7/8"
... 192 rectangles 1 7/8" x 3 1/4"
... 48 strips 1 7/8" x 6"
... 48 strips 1 7/8" x 7 3/8"

Sew!
1. Draw diagonal line on wrong side of assorted batik 3 1/4" square. Referring to Diagram I, place marked square on black solid 3 1/4" x 6" rectangle, right sides together, aligning raw edges. Stitch on drawn line; trim away and discard excess fabric. Press open. Repeat on opposite end of rectangle with matching batik square to make large pieced rectangle. Make 30 sets of 4 matching.

2. Referring to Diagram II, arrange and sew 3 rows using 4 black 3 1/4" squares, 4 matching large pieced rectangles, and matching batik 6" square. Sew rows together to make large star. Stitch black 3 1/4" x 11 1/2" strip to right side of block (Diagram III). Stitch black 3 1/4" x 14 1/4" strip to top to complete Large Sawtooth Star Variation Block. Make 30 total for quilt center.

3. Repeat mark, sew, trim, and press process from Step 1, using matching batik 1 7/8" squares and black 1 7/8" x 3 1/4" rectangle (Diagram IV). Make 48 sets of 4 matching small pieced rectangles. Referring to Diagram V, arrange and sew 3 rows using 4 black 1 7/8" squares, 4 matching small pieced rectangles, and matching batik 3 1/4" square. Sew rows together to make small star. Stitch black 1 7/8" x 6" strip to left side (Diagram VI). Stitch black 1 7/8" x 7 3/8" strip to bottom to complete Small Sawtooth Star Variation Block. Make 48 total for border.

4. Note: Refer to Assembly Diagram for following steps. Watch orientation of blocks closely in both quilt center and borders. When stitching, adjust as necessary to make pieced borders fit. Arrange and sew 6 rows of 5 large blocks each. Stitch rows together.
5. To make borders, arrange and sew 4 strips of 12 small blocks each. Stitch 2 strips to sides of quilt center. Sew remaining strips to top and bottom.

6. Layer, baste, and quilt. Michele chose Fairfield Soft Touch batting and machine quilted the stars with rayon and metallic threads. She used YLI variegated Jeans Stitch thread in an allover meander on the background.
7. For pieced binding, stitch assorted 2 1/2" strips together end to end using diagonal seams (Diagram VII). Bind as usual.
