Step 3 (Gift/Shopping Bag)
Sew red and cream half-square triangles together to make half-square
squares (see Diagram IV). Make 8. Referring to Shoo Fly Block Diagram,
make 3 horizontal rows. Sew rows together. Make 2 blocks. Referring
to Diagram V, sew 3" x 9 1/2" navy strips to sides of blocks.
Sew 2 1/2" x 14" strip to tops of blocks and 4 1/2" x
14" strips to bottoms of blocks to make front and back panel. Sew
one side seam (see Diagram VI), and layer with batting only (no backing).
Machine-quilt-in-the-ditch. Trim batting even with panels. Right sides
together, sew remaining side seam and bottom seam (see Diagram VII-A).
To make boxed corners on bottom of bag, refer to Diagram VII-B.
