There are many wonderful border stripes available today that become even more exciting when selectively cut for patchwork. The Windmill Blocks offer a great opportunity to experiment with cutting motifs from different areas of a printed stripe. Here's an idea: Use 4 identically cut shapes in 1 block and 4 more from another part of the stripe in the next.

Step 1 (Place Mats)
Referring to Diagram I, with wrong side facing up, measure 7 5/8" from end of 3 7/8" x 11 3/8" teal border stripe rectangle. Align 45° line on acrylic rotary cutting ruler with fabric edge and cut into 2 trapezoids. Cut 8 trapezoids, making sure wrong side always faces up. Sew teal trapezoid and white quarter-square triangle together as shown in Diagram II. Make 8 pieced units. Stitch pieced units together to make block (see Diagram III). Make 2 blocks.

Step 3.
Layer and baste 15" x 21" white-on-white rectangle (right side down), polyester fleece rectangle, and place mat top (right side up). Quilt as desired. To bind, trim backing and fleece rectangles even with place mat top. Press under 1/4" on one long edge of all 1 1/2" teal solid strips. Referring to Diagram VI-A, sew 20" teal solid strips to top and bottom of place mat, right sides together. Trim ends even with edge of place mat. Wrap folded edge of binding to back and pin in place. Pin 15" strips to sides of place mat, wrapping 1" excess at each end of strip to the back, butting against binding strip on top and bottom (see Diagram VI-B). Stitch. Wrap binding to back, pin, and whipstitch in place.

Step 4 (Napkins)
To make napkin, place 16 1/2" teal solid and white-on-white squares right sides together. Sew 1/4" seam around edges, leaving 3" opening to turn right side out. Turn, press, and stitch opening closed. To finish, edge stitch 1/8" from outer edge. Make 2.

Step 5 (Napkin Rings)
Referring to Diagram VII-A, place 2" x 6" teal border stripe rectangle on 2" x 6" white-on-white rectangle, right sides together. Stitch 1/4" from fabric edge on long sides. Turn right side out and press. Cut elastic into 2 pieces 4" long, and sew to center of tube on white side stretching as you sew (see Diagram VII-B). To finish napkin ring, fold in half bringing short ends together, and stitch raw edges as shown in Diagram VII-C. Make 2.

Stitch 2 1/2" white-on-white squares to ends of 2 1/2" x 10" teal border stripe strip. Sew pieced strips to ends of table runner. Cut white corner squares diagonally corner to corner (see Diagram IX). Layer and baste 16" x 56" white-on-white rectangle (right side down), polyester fleece rectangle and table runner top (right side up). Quilt as desired. Bind with teal solid fabric.

Align rotary cutting ruler with marks and cut corners. Make 4. Stitch pieced unit to each edge of 8" teal solid square (see Diagram XI). Place basket liner on top of 23" white-on-white square, right sides together. Cut white square to match outer edges of basket liner. Sew 1/4" from outer edge, leaving 3" opening to turn right side out. Turn, press, and stitch opening closed. To finish, top stitch 1/8" from outer edge.
