Step 2
Trace Templates A-L on paper side of paper-backed fusible web. Cut apart,
leaving small margin beyond drawn lines. (See Fusible Appliqué
Hint below.) Following manufacturer's instructions, fuse to wrong side
of appropriate fabrics; cut apart on drawn lines.
Fusible Appliqué Hint from Julie
After tracing the cats (Templates A & AR) on fusible web, cut
away the center, leaving approximately 1/2" of fusible web
along the edges only. This will soften the cat appliqué. |
Step 3
Referring to Assembly Diagram and photo, position template fabrics in
alphabetical order. Following manufacturer's instructions, fuse in place.
Note: The appliqué raw edges are secured during quilting (see
Planning and Step 6). With black marker, color cats' eyes and add facial
features. Draw musical notes.

Step 4
Referring to Assembly Diagram, sew 1" x 20" black texture
strips to sides of Kitty Appliqué Block; trim even with top and
bottom. Sew remaining black texture strips to top/bottom; trim even
with sides. Sew 3" x 18" black/white stripe strips to sides;
trim even. Sew 3" x 26" black/white stripe strip to top; trim
even.
Step 5
To write message on white rectangle for lower border, use freezer paper
to stabilize fabric as follows. Cut freezer paper rectangle slightly
smaller than 3" x 8 1/2" and iron to wrong side of white 3"
x 8 1/2" rectangle. Keeping seam allowances in mind, use black
marker to write message on white rectangle. Remove freezer paper. Stitch
3" x 8 1/2" black/white stripe strips to sides of prepared
white 3" x 8 1/2" strip. Sew pieced strip to bottom of quilt.
Step 6
Layer and baste quilt top for quilting method of your choice. Julie
machine quilted with monofilament thread. Using a darning foot with
feed dogs down, she quilted just inside the raw edge of each appliqué
fabric. Julie covered the sky with a meander. She stitched a zigzag
design on the green grass and a continuous vine of small flowers on
the floral foreground. The outer border features a feather. Bind quilt
with black texture fabric (See Basic
Quiltmaking Instructions).
