Planning
Karen's delightful reindeer is decked out for the holidays. Check your local craft store for the miniature jingle bells and holiday lights. To add a festive touch to the appliqué fabrics, Karen used red velveteen for the reindeer's collar. Do likewise if you wish.

Dark blue batik
... 4 strips 1 1/2" x 15"

... 2 strips 1 3/4" x 21"

Step 1. Referring to Diagram I, stitch light blue batik 10 1/2" square to white-on-muslin print 3 5/8" x 10 1/2" rectangle. Make 1.
Step 2. Trace Templates A-L on paper side of paper-backed fusible web. Cut apart, leaving small margin beyond drawn lines. Following manufacturer's instructions, fuse to wrong side of appropriate fabrics; cut apart on drawn lines.
Step 3. Finger-press pieced rectangle in half lengthwise. Referring to photo and Diagram II, position template fabrics using fold and seam line as placement guides. See Karen's Tips for Positioning the Appliqué. Following manufacturer's instructions, fuse in place.

Karen's Tips for Positioning the Appliqué
For placement of the appliqué, Karen finds it easiest to trace the entire design, including placement lines, on a piece of heavy see-through plastic or paper.

Place the pieced background fabric rectangle on a flat surface and loosely tape the traced plastic/paper design over it, matching placement lines.

Slip the appliqué pieces between background fabric and plastic, aligning with traced design. Karen suggests using tweezers to handle small pieces such as the eyebrows. When pleased with the arrangement, remove plastic carefully and follow manufacturer's instructions for fusing.
