Step 4. Karen
secured the edges of the appliqué fabrics with hand buttonhole
stitch (Diagram
III-A) and embroidery floss (matching color to the fabric). She used stem
stitch (Diagram III-B) to make the mouth and French knots (III-C) for
the eyes. Using chain stitch and black embroidery floss (Diagram III-D),
Karen stitched the holiday light cord tangled around the antlers (see
template) and added a holiday light every few stitches (marked on template
with *). Tack miniature jingle bells to collar.

Step 5. Referring to Assembly
Diagram, sew dark blue batik 1 1/2" x 15" strips to sides;
trim even with top and bottom. Stitch remaining dark blue batik strips
to top/bottom; trim with sides. Sew ivory print 2 1/2" x 18"
strips to sides; trim even. Stitch remaining ivory print strips to top/bottom;
trim even. Sew medium blue mottle 1 1/2" x 21" strips to sides;
trim even. Stitch medium blue mottle 1 3/4" x 21" strips to
top/bottom; trim even.

Step 6. Layer and baste quilt top for quilting method
of your choice. Karen machine ditch quilted the borders and outlined
details on the light blue batik background that reminded her of snowflakes.
Bind quilt with navy solid fabric (See Basic
Quiltmaking Instructions).
