Planning
Arrange your blocks carefully before stitching them together to ensure that you achieve the diagonal chain effect. For the four-patch corner squares (see outer border), Maria made two with matching plaid/check fabrics and two that don't match.

Cutting the Fabric
Assorted plaids/checks
... cut 49 matching sets of:
4 squares 3" x 3"
2 squares 5 1/2" x 5 1/2"
... cut a total of:
8 squares 3" x 3"
Cream print
... 108 squares 3½ x 3½

Red print
... *4 strips 2 1/2" x 78", cut on lengthwise grain
... 96 squares 3" x 3"
Navy plaid
... 4 strips 5 1/2" x 78", cut on lengthwise grain
*Cut first.

Step 1
Referring to Diagram I, sew 4-patch square using 2 cream print 3" squares and 2 matching assorted plaid/check 3" squares. Make 25 matching pairs. In same manner, use 2 red print 3" squares and 2 matching assorted plaid/check 3" squares; make 24 matching pairs. To make 4-patch square for border corner, use 2 cream print 3" squares and 2 assorted plaid/check 3" squares; make 4 total and set aside.

Step 2
Stitch matching pair of 4-patch squares together with matching pair of assorted plaid/check 5 1/2" squares to make Four-patch Block (see Diagram II). Make 49 total.

Step 3
Referring to Assembly Diagram, carefully arrange and stitch 7 rows of 7 blocks each. Sew rows together. Stitch 2 red print 2 1/2" x 78" strips to sides of quilt; trim even with top and bottom. Sew remaining red print strips to top/bottom; trim even with sides.

Step 4
Measure exact width of quilt (raw edge to raw edge). Trim 2 navy plaid 5 1/2" x 78" strips to exact width measurement; sew 4-patch squares to ends of trimmed strips. Stitch untrimmed navy plaid strips to sides of quilt; trim even with top/bottom. Stitch pieced strips to top/bottom.

Step 5
Layer and baste quilt top for quilting method of your choice. Maria machine ditch quilted. Bind quilt with red print fabric (See Basic Quiltmaking Instructions).
