Peach print and blue print (butterfly wings) ... 6" x 10" piece each
Yellow print and purple print (butterfly wings) ... 6" x 10" piece each
Green solid and pink solid (butterfly bodies) ... 2" x 5" piece each
Lavender solid and yellow solid (butterfly bodies) ... 2" x 5" piece each
White-on-white print (block background) ... 3/8 yd.

Peach solid (inner border) ... 1/4 yd.
Green print (outer border, binding) ... 3/4 yd.
Backing ... 1 yd.

Cutting the Fabric
Assorted prints—cut a total of:

half diagonally to make 112 half-square triangles

Step 1. Sew 2 assorted print 2 7/8" half-square triangles together, as shown in Diagram I, to make pieced square. Make 56 total and set aside.
Step 2
. Trace templates on paper side of paper-backed fusible web. Cut apart, leaving small margin beyond drawn lines. Following manufacturer's instructions, fuse to wrong side of appropriate fabrics; cut apart on drawn lines.
Step 3.
Finger-press white-on-white 8 1/2" square in half diagonally twice; use folds as placement guide. Referring to Diagram II, position template fabrics in alphabetical order. Following manufacturer's instructions, fuse in place. Make 2 of each arrangement shown. Appliqué edges by hand or machine using buttonhole stitch (see Diagram III).
Step 4. To make antennae, work stem stitch (Diagram IV) using black embroidery floss. Make French knot (Diagram V) at end of each antenna to complete Butterfly Blocks.

Step 5. Referring to Assembly Diagram, arrange and stitch block row using 2 blocks and 1 strip of 4 pieced squares; make 2. Make sashing row using 8 pieced squares and 1 white 2 1/2" square. Sew block rows to sashing row.
Step 6
. Stitch 2 strips of 9 pieced squares each; sew to sides. Stitch 2 strips of 11 pieced squares each; sew to top and bottom. Stitch 1" x 25" peach solid strips to sides; trim even with top/bottom. Stitch remaining peach solid strips to top/bottom; trim even with sides. Sew green print 3½ x 30½ strips to sides; trim even with top/bottom. Sew remaining green print strips to top/bottom; trim even with sides.

Step 7. Layer and baste quilt top for quilting method of your choice. Janice machine ditch quilted the seams. By hand, she outline quilted the butterflies. Janice stitched an X in the white center square and a rectangle in the quilt center, which she echo quilted outward through the block backgrounds. Bind quilt with green print fabric (See Basic Quiltmaking Instructions).
