Sew It!
Step 1.
Trace Templates A-I on paper side of paper-backed fusible web. Cut apart, leaving small margin beyond drawn lines. Following manufacturer's instructions, fuse to wrong side of appropriate fabrics; cut apart on drawn lines. In same manner, prepare purchased flag with paper-backed fusible web.
Step 2. Before removing paper backing from cats, arrange stripes, eyes, and noses on them. Following manufacturer's instructions, fuse details to cats. Place cats on hard surface and, using permanent black fine-tip marking pen, color in pupils and draw whiskers and facial expressions. In same manner, add flame detail with orange permanent marker.
Step 3. Finger-press navy texture 18 1/2" x 22 1/2" rectangle in half on both length and width; use folds as placement guide. Referring to Assembly Diagram, position cats, Template F-H fabrics, flag, and 1 star; fuse in place.
Step 4. Sew 1 1/2" x 22 1/2" red/white stripe strips to sides. Stitch gold pin dot 1 1/2" squares to red/white stripe 1 1/2" x 18 1/2" strips; sew to top and bottom of quilt. Sew red/white stripe 1 1/2" x 5 1/2" strips to ends of navy 5 1/2" x 22 1/2" strips; sew to quilt sides. For top/bottom strips, stitch red/white stripe 1 1/2" x 5 1/2" strip and navy 5 1/2" square to each end of navy 5 1/2" x 18 1/2" strip; sew to top and bottom of quilt.

Step 5. Referring to photo, position and fuse remaining stars in place on borders and each border corner.
Step 6. Layer and baste quilt top for quilting method of your choice. Julie machine quilted. To appliqué and quilt at the same time, with monofilament thread, she stitched just inside the edge of each appliqué and again 1/4" outside each appliqué. She ditch quilted the stripe border. Using metallic and variegated threads, Julie stitched lines that extend from the starbursts to the outer edges of the quilt. Julie says, "This is where you can have fun. It's all freehand and wild. But better watch out where those sparks land!"
Step 7. Bind quilt with red/white stripe fabric (see Quiltmaking Fundamentals).
