Step 2. Finger-press white-on-white 10 1/2" square in half diagonally twice; use folds as placement guide. Referring to Diagram I, position template fabrics using matching sets of A-B, and matching set of C. Note: Template A fabrics will be aligned with raw edges of background square and sewn into seam when blocks are sewn together. Following manufacturer's instructions, fuse in place to make Happy Hearts Block. Julie used machine zigzag stitch to appliqué the edges. Make 20 total.

Step 3. Arrange and sew 3 rows using assorted print/solid and white 2 1/2" squares (Diagram II). Sew rows together to make Nine-patch Block. Make 19 total using 5 assorted with 4 white squares. Make 17 total using 5 white with 4 assorted squares. Make 2 segments using 1 assorted and 2 white 2 1/2" squares to be used as spacers in the pieced outer border.

Step 4. Referring to Assembly Diagram, arrange and sew 5 rows of 4 Happy Hearts Blocks each. Sew rows together. Sew green solid 2 1/2" x 55" strips to sides; trim even with top and bottom. Stitch remaining green strips to top/bottom; trim even with sides.
Step 5. For side pieced borders, carefully arrange and sew 2 strips alternating Nine-patch Blocks as shown; sew to sides of quilt. For top/bottom pieced borders, arrange and sew 2 strips alternating Nine-patch Blocks plus spacer as shown; sew to top/bottom.

Step 6. Layer and baste quilt top for quilting method of your choice. Julie machine quilted a meander on the blocks. She added a continuous line heart design on the green border. Bind quilt with green solid fabric (see Quiltmaking Fundamentals). |
