Coasters:
Step 1. Referring to Diagram I-A, stitch 1 1/4" x 4 1/2" green/brown print strips to opposite sides of beige/ivory floral 4 1/2" square. Sew 1 1/4" x 6" green/brown print strips to top and bottom. Make 4.

Step 2. Trace templates on paper side of paper-backed fusible web. Cut apart, leaving small margin beyond drawn line. Following manufacturer's instructions, fuse to wrong side of appropriate fabrics; cut apart on marked line.
Step 3. Finger-press background in half on both length and width; use folds as placement guide. Referring to Diagram I-B, position template fabrics. Following manufacturer's instructions, fuse in place. Appliqué edges by hand or machine using satin stitch (see Diagram II). Make 4 coaster tops.

Step 4. To prepare hanging loop, use beige/ivory floral 3/4" x 14" strip and refer to Diagram III. Fold 1/8" along lengthwise edges to wrong side (III-A); press. Fold in half lengthwise and stitch along edge (III-B). Cut 4 segments 3" long.

Step 5. Fold loop segment in half and pin to top edge of right side of coaster, aligning raw ends with raw edge of coaster (see photo for placement). Note: Top of loop should be pointing down toward coffee cup handle.
Step 6. Place 6" backing square on coaster top, right sides together. Place both on top of batting 6" square. Using 1/4" seam allowance, stitch around all sides, leaving 3" opening for turning. Turn right side out. Hand stitch opening closed. Make 4 coasters. To finish, machine ditch quilt the background/border seam, starting and stopping at edge of steam appliqué.

Coaster Hanger:
Step 7. To make heart squares, refer to Steps 2 and 3 and Diagram IV. Fuse heart to beige print 4 1/2" square. Make 4 total. If desired, appliqué edges using satin stitch.

Step 8. Referring to Diagram V, sew 3 rows using heart squares, blue 1 1/4" x 4 1/2" strips, and red 1 1/4" square. Sew rows together. Stitch 1 1/4" x 9 1/4" green holly print strip to left side and green texture 1 1/4" x 9 1/4" strip to right side. Sew assorted red print 1 1/4" squares to ends of remaining green strips; stitch to top and bottom.

Step 9. Layer and baste quilt top for quilting method of your choice. Alex machine ditch quilted the sashing, border, and appliqué. Bind quilt with red floral fabric (see Quiltmaking Fundamentals).
Step 10. To make hanging tab, fold green texture 2 1/2" x 3 1/2" strip in half lengthwise, right sides together (see Diagram VI). Stitch 1/4" from raw edge. Press tube flat, centering seam allowance. Stitch across 1 end, 1/4" from edge. Turn right side out. Tuck raw edge 1/4" into open end. Tack open end to back of quilt top, just below binding (see photo for location along top edge). Fold tab over to quilt front; position button and stitch through all layers to secure button and tab. Repeat process to make and attach remaining 2 tabs.

Step 11. Stitch button to top of each heart to complete.
