Planning
To create a sense of unity in her scrappy quilt, Jean selected only bright, generally mid-toned pastels of both 30s reproduction prints and a range of complementary recent prints. Jean recommends selecting from any one style of prints and sticking within a restricted range of tones to ensure a successful scrappy effect.

Layout and Assembly Tips from the Designer
• Pin blocks to a design wall (such as a blanket hung on a wall). Arrange and rearrange blocks until you're happy with the layout.
• To avoid having to match seams when sewing blocks together, rotate blocks so long strips of one block will abut short strips of neighboring block (see Assembly Diagram below).

Step 1. Referring to Diagram I, stitch together 4 assorted print 3" squares to make 4-patch. Make 56 total.

Step 2. Sew matching pair of 3" x 5 1/2" rectangles to opposite sides of 4-patch (Diagram II). Add matching pair of 3" x 10 1/2" strips to make Four-patch in a Square Block. Make 56 total.

Step 3. Referring to Assembly Diagram, arrange and stitch 8 rows of 7 blocks each. Sew rows together.

Step 4. Layer and baste quilt top for quilting method of your choice. Using monofilament thread, Jean machine quilted in a large meandering pattern. Bind quilt with rose print fabric (see Quiltmaking Fundamentals).
