Plan
Kathie's quilt features fabrics from P & B's Old Blooms collection, designed by Pat Sloan. Kathie selected a beige stripe for the block background fabric. While the stripe adds interest and movement to the quilt top when the blocks are rotated, the appliqué placement is uncomplicated, with just a single block placement (Diagram II). We call for assorted green prints for the stems and leaves. Kathie used three different greens in different quantities, but she did use a matching set within each block. We instruct you to cut an equal number of circles for the star centers from each of two tan prints. Use more of your favorite tan, if you prefer.
Our instructions lead you to prepare the block corners before adding the fused poppies. This method enables you to better center the fused design.

Step 1. Draw diagonal line on wrong side of navy floral 3" square with marking tool of your choice. Referring to Diagram I, place navy square on corner of beige stripe 10" square, right sides together, aligning raw edges. Stitch on drawn line; trim away and discard excess fabric. Press open. Repeat process on remaining corners to make pieced background square. Make 20. Step 2. Trace Templates A-E on paper side of paper-backed fusible web. Cut apart, leaving small margin beyond drawn lines. Following manufacturer's instructions, fuse to wrong side of appropriate fabrics; cut apart on drawn lines. Step 3. Finger-press pieced background square in half twice diagonally; use folds as placement guide. Referring to Diagram II, position template fabrics in alphabetical order. Following manufacturer's instructions, fuse in place. Appliqué edges by hand or machine using buttonhole stitch (Diagram III). Make 20 Poppy Blocks.
