Planning
To make two projects in one, be sure to follow the Bonus Squares instructions.

Jean used mostly bright, medium-dark valued pastels to ensure a sense of unity in her quilt. If you are working with scrap pieces of assorted fabrics, a 7" x 8 1/2" rectangle of each assorted print will be sufficient for cutting the required matching squares.

Cutting the Fabric
Assorted printscut 80 matching sets of:
... 2 squares 2 1/2" x 2 1/2"
... 2 squares 4" x 4"
White solid
... 160 squares 4" x 4"

Step 1. Read Bonus Squares instructions before beginning and follow those instructions if you wish to make small pieced squares in addition to the squares needed for the featured quilt. If not making bonus squares, follow this step. Draw diagonal line on wrong side of assorted print 2 1/2" square with marking tool of your choice. Referring to Diagram I, place marked square on white 4" square, right sides together, aligning raw edges. Stitch on drawn line; trim away and discard excess fabric. Press open to make pieced square. Make 80 matching pairs (160 total).
Step 2. Sew together matching set of 2 print 4" squares and 2 pieced squares, as shown in Diagram II, to make quarter block. Make 80 total.

Step 3. Arrange and stitch together 4 quarter blocks to make X Block (see Diagram III). Make 20 total.

Step 4. Referring to Assembly Diagram, sew 5 rows of 4 blocks each. Stitch rows together.

Step 5. Layer and baste quilt top for quilting method of your choice. Jean machine quilted a meander in each "snowball" and zigzags in each "bow tie". Bind quilt with rust print fabric (see Quiltmaking Fundamentals).
