Plan!
Cheryl pulled shades of gold, dark red and green from her border fabric, and added warm browns for a welcoming autumn feeling. She also planned the arrangement of the star block corner squares to form a secondary pattern of red, green and gold four patches.
Cut!
Assorted dark plaids, stripes and textures—cut a total of:
... 100 squares 2 1/2" x 2 1/2"
... 36 squares 2 7/8" x 2 7/8", cut in half diagonally to make 72 half-square triangles
... 16 assorted light plaids, stripes and textures—cut from each:
... 4 squares 2 7/8" x 2 7/8", cut in half diagonally to make 8 half-square triangles
Black print
... *4 strips 4 1/2" x 45", cut on lengthwise grain
... 28 squares 2 7/8" x 2 7/8", cut in half diagonally to make 56 half-square triangles
... 28 squares 2 1/2" x 2 1/2"
* Cut first.
Sew!
Step 1. Study Fabric Layout Diagrams to plan fabric arrangement for all blocks.
Step 2. Refer to Block Assembly Diagrams for block construction. Using 2 2 7/8 half-square triangles (see Fabric Layout Diagrams above for color combinations), make 8 pieced squares per block. Arrange and sew 4 rows using selected 2 1/2" squares and pieced squares. Sew rows together to make Star Block. Make 16 total.

Block Assembly Diagrams
Step 3. Referring to Assembly Diagram, arrange and sew 4 rows of 4 blocks each, watching placement of corner, side and center blocks. Sew rows together. Stitch black 4 1/2" x 45" strips to sides; trim even with top and bottom. Stitch remaining black strips to top and bottom; trim even with sides.

Step 4. Layer and baste quilt top for quilting method of your choice. Cheryl machine quilted. She quilted 1/4" inside the four patches and the on-point squares between stars. The border was meander quilted. Bind quilt with dark red fabric (see Quiltmaking Fundamentals).
