Fusible Appliqué Hint from Julie
After tracing the large templates on fusible web, cut away the center, leaving approximately 1/2" of fusible web along the edges only. This will soften the appliqué.

Sew It!
1. A See Diagram I and stitch together blue mottle 16" square and brown texture 5 1/2" x 16" rectangle. Finger-press pieced rectangle in half on both length and width; use folds as placement guide.

2. Trace Templates A-L on paper side of paper-backed fusible web. Cut apart, leaving small margin beyond drawn lines (see Fusible Appliqué Hint from Julie, above). Following manufacturer's instructions, fuse to wrong side of appropriate fabrics; cut apart on drawn lines.
3. Referring to Assembly Diagram and photo, position template fabrics. Following manufacturer's instructions, fuse in place. Note: The appliqué edges are secured during quilting (see Plan It! and Step 8). With black marker, color cats' eyes and add facial features (see Templates A and C).

4. Sew green mottle 1 1/4" x 25" strips to sides of Appliqué Block; trim even with top and bottom. Sew remaining green strips to top/bottom; trim even with sides.
5. On wrong side of light gold mottle 1 7/8" square, draw diagonal line with marking tool of your choice. Place light gold square on black solid 1 7/8" square, right sides together (see Diagram II). Sew 1/4" seam on each side of marked line. Cut apart on marked line. Press open to make pieced squares. Make 16.
6. Using black solid 1 1/2" squares, pieced squares and orange check 1 1/2" square, arrange and stitch 3 rows of 3 squares each (Diagram III). Sew rows together to make Star Border Corner Block. Make 4.

7. Measure exact width of quilt center (from raw edge to raw edge). Trim 2 black/white check 3 1/2" x 26" strips to this measurement and sew Star Border Corner Blocks to ends. Sew remaining black/white check strips to sides of quilt; trim even with top and bottom. Stitch pieced strips to top/bottom.
8. Layer and baste quilt top for quilting method of your choice. Julie machine quilted with matching threads. Using a machine zigzag stitch, she covered the raw edges of all appliqué (Diagram IV) and added curved lines on the pumpkin. Using variegated green thread and a zigzag stitch, Julie stitched curlicue vines, beginning at the pumpkin stem (see photo). The bird's feet were stitched in the same manner with yellow thread. The background is filled with meander quilting, and the outer border has a double wave design. Bind quilt with black solid fabric (see Quiltmaking Fundamentals).
