Plan It!
Pat made her delightful seasonal table runner and coasters (click here for pattern) using overdyed felted wool lined with cotton fabric. If you have been wanting to try a wool project this is an easy fun one to make. To felt wool, machine wash wool pieces in hot water and dry in a hot dryer. Be sure to empty the lint trap often.
Overdyed woolens are extra fun to play with. Overdying can make one color of wool look like many different shades on the same piece. This allows you to pick and choose the spot on the wool piece you wish to cut a template shape from. Overdyed wool pieces can often be purchased at quilt show markets or rug hooking shops.

Black felted wool (background) and backing fabric—cut from each:
... 1 rectangle 12 1/2" x 25"
1. Trace Templates A-K on paper side of paper-backed fusible web. Cut apart, leaving small margin beyond drawn lines. Following manufacturer's instructions, fuse to wrong side of appropriate wool fabric; cut apart on drawn lines.
2. Finger-press 12 1/2" x 25" felted black rectangle in half lengthwise and crosswise; use folds as placement guide. Referring to Diagram I and photo, position template fabrics in alphabetical order. Following manufacturer's instructions, fuse in place. Appliqué edges using machine or hand buttonhole stitch (Diagram II). Pat added detail lines on the pumpkin and leaves (see templates).
3. Lay appliquéd table runner top on 12 1/2" x 25" backing fabric rectangle, right sides together, aligning raw edges. Using 1/4" seam allowance, sew around outside edge, leaving a 6" opening for turning. Turn table runner right side out, press and hand stitch opening closed. Pat added a row of buttonhole stitching along the outside edge.
