Sew It!

Referring to Diagram I, sew matching assorted bright and blue mottle 6 1/4" quarter-square triangles together. Make 12 sets of 4 matching. Sew assorted bright 5 7/8" half-square triangle to pieced triangle to make pieced square (Diagram II). Make 12 sets of 4 matching. Arrange and sew 2 rows of 2 matching pieced squares , watching orientation (Diagram III); sew rows together to complete Windmill Block. Make 12 total.

2. Referring to Assembly Diagram, arrange and sew 4 rows of 3 blocks each. Sew rows together.
3. Stitch orange print 1 1/2" x 44" strips to sides; trim even with top and bottom. Sew remaining orange 1 1/2" x 44" strips to top/bottom; trim even with sides. Stitch blue mottle 1 1/2" x 46" strips to sides; trim even. Sew remaining blue strips to top/ bottom; trim even. Stitch orange 4 1/2" x 48" strips to sides; trim even. Sew remaining orange strips to top/ bottom; trim even.

4. Trace Templates A-B on paper side of paper-backed fusible web. Cut apart, leaving small margin beyond drawn lines. Following manufacturer's instructions, fuse to wrong side of appropriate fabrics; cut apart on drawn lines.
5. Referring to photo, position template fabrics in alphabetical order. Following manufacturer's instructions, fuse in place. Appliqué edges using machine or hand buttonhole stitch (Diagram IV). Using black embroidery floss, make French knots for eyes (Diagram V), and flight trail in long running stitch (Diagram VI).

6. Layer and baste quilt top for quilting method of your choice. Andrea machine quilted a meandering swirl pattern over the blocks, outlined the appliqués, and filled the narrow orange border with wavy lines. The blue border features a continuous swirl, and the outer border is filled with a large meander. Bind quilt with orange print fabric (see Quiltmaking Fundamentals).
