Planning
Step 1. Trace templates on paper side of paper-backed fusible web. Cut apart, leaving small margin beyond drawn lines. Following manufacturers instructions, fuse to wrong side of appropriate fabrics; cut apart on drawn lines. |
|
Step 2. Finger-press denim 6" square in half on both length and width; use folds as placement guide. Referring to Diagram I and photo, position template fabrics. Following manufacturer's instructions, fuse in place. Appliqué edges by hand or machine using buttonhole stitch (see Diagram II). Make 22 total appliquéd squares.
Step 3. To make Nine-patch Blocks, arrange and stitch coordinating sets of print 6" squares together with matching sets of denim 6" squares (see Diagram III). Make 5 total using denim squares in corners, 5 total using print squares in corners, and 2 total all-denim blocks as illustrated.
Step 4. Referring to Assembly Diagram, arrange and stitch 4 rows of 3 blocks each. Sew rows together. Add additional template fabrics to quilt top if desired (Elizabeth added star Template S to bottom row); buttonhole stitch edges. Stitch red texture 1 1/2" x 70" strips to sides of quilt; trim even with top and bottom. Stitch remaining red texture strips to top/bottom; trim even with sides. Step 5. For pieced side borders, sew 2 strips of 10 denim 6" squares each. Add 6" x 7" assorted red print rectangles to ends; sew strips to sides of quilt. For pieced top/bottom borders, sew 2 strips of 7 denim 6" squares each. Add assorted red print 6" x 12 1/2" rectangle to each end. Stitch to top/bottom of quilt, matching red prints. |
