Fabric Choices
The feature quilt has nine blocks each of six color groupings, set in diagonal rows. Fabrics are from Marcus Brothers' Aunt Grace Yarn Dyes collection. Refer to the photo to duplicate these fabric selections, or substitute other color groupings according to your preferences. Note that Brandy chose to use the red and yellow plaids from the border in her block piecing as well. If you choose to do likewise, you may need to purchase additional yardage of these fabrics.
Note that the block inner triangles are cut as quarter-square triangles, so the plaids "read" correctly. When joining bias edges to bias edges, handle carefully to prevent stretching.

Sew
1 Using set of coordinating plaids, sew 4 1/4" quarter-square triangles to sides of 3 1/2" square (Diagram I). Stitch 3 7/8" half-square triangles to sides of pieced square to make Economy Block (Diagram II). Make 9. Repeat with remaining 5 sets of coordinating plaids. Make 54 total Economy Blocks.
2 Referring to Assembly Diagram, arrange and sew 9 rows of 6 blocks each. Sew rows together.
3 To make side border, sew 9 red and 9 yellow rectangles together along 3 1/2" sides. Make 2. Sew to sides of quilt. To make top/bottom border, stitch 6 red and 6 yellow rectangles together. Make 2. Stitch 3 1/2" squares to ends. Stitch to top/bottom of quilt.
4 Layer, baste, and quilt. Wavy lines were machine quilted around the blocks. A swirl pattern was added to the block centers and red border rectangles. Bind with red plaid.
